Was, for once, doing homework, and trolling our compulsory online discussion boards, to find a post in one topic saying "Sus, did you realise which post # your last one got?" No, no I hadn't, but I went to look anyway.

I win. I don't care what gets posted from here on in. I got the one that matters.

No, I haven't forgotten to post the background for The Weirdening campaign, I simply don't have the details for all the characters. I sighs.

But, a couple more lit reviews are done, yay! And I am allowed to use Shared Fantasy for multiple entries because it is huge and all relevant. Less work, more yay. And I am less worried about the academic panel presentation now, because I am told it will be a dimmed room in which I will be hiding behind the computer controlling the powerpoint. And my supervisors insist I put in a picture of me being purple. They're also pleased with my marks for the Creative Research Method unit, so I feel better.

I am such a sucker for these things. Especially when procrastinating. And then I can never find them again, or prove that yes, I -did- get chaotic evil THREE times. But yay! for result. Loves him so much.

My friends, they are made of win.

In the aftermath of my birthday, I am now the happiest owner of a Darth Vader replica sfx lightsabre. Which I have wanted for... forever. It's a lightsabre, it makes lightsabre sounds and it's Darth Vader's. Pure awesome. Guys, I love you so much.

Also, have been given the laptop, that was my mother's but I kept snurching for homework purposes and the reading of fanfic. So, having this picture as a background isn't quite so bad now that I'm not going to get strange questions about it. Not that that would have stopped me.
*glee*

And, [info]eerian_sadow, thankyou so, so much. You rock!

This is why I hate C&T, and this is why it isn't worth more than a grand. The work we have to invest in something that is actually of no help to me at all is really vastly ridiculous.

I mean, I get that this week's reading is talking about the privelege of ocularcentricism in society.

*facepalm* And every time "we're a visual culture" comes up, my mind apparently wants to argue, because I can't help but think (because I'm just wired wrong) of the sentence I read somewhere... Prowl smiled slightly at this display of Jazz's nature as a truly tactile mech, touching where others would simply look. *buries head in arms*

AHA! It's all just grammatically incorrect.

Okay, this one is crap. The outline was so obscure, I don't know if I've even done it halfway right. And, I know it's terribly written. But I submitted it, just finished, 15 minutes before deadline. So, thank the Goddess that the mark for this cannot possibly effect my thesis mark in the end.

On another, more amusing note, apparently Ann has been mentioning to her first year cultural studies class, when talking about theories of the self, the crazy student who would always bring D&D into it. It might be someone else, but I kind of doubt it, especially since she -is- my supervisor.  Well, at least I know I picked the right topic for this beast.

Oh, to hell with it. This whole dragon thing has been bugging me all week. And, I argue, this thesis -is- about D&D. And I have notes here somewhere.... and will do this for the other campaign after its next session too.

Technically, the time schedule should have PANIC written all over it in big red letters, and in bigger red letters right above "thesis due." Following "thesis due," it should also have "PARTY and/or die of Exhaustion." Yeah, lets see me keep that schedule.
This one is going in with the ethics clearance, so soon, very very soon, I can start pursuing the interviews.
"Significance" is such a pretentious section...

Beating It Into Submission

Should it amuse me so much that one supervisor tells me to ask the other, who tells me to ask the lecuterer in charge of honours? Or should I be worried instead? Can't ever complain of feeling unloved when the three of them are helping me, I suppose. Meanwhile, those waiting room chairs actually are comfortable enough to fall asleep in.

Research Question now stands thusly (after being overseen by no less than all three tutors):
This research seeks to address issues of player investment in Dungeons and Dragons, and how to best present these theories to an audience.
The central research question is thus: How do the key elements of character, setting and player agency function in relation to an emotional investment from gamers and how is that illustrated by reactions to changes and new versions?

I require a clause because, although the creative piece will answer the question, the question doesn't say that it's a Publishing/Professional Writing major. But, I'm told this will work, so it better.

And hah. I don't need ethics clearance for game observations, because this counts as 'reflection on daily life' which you can't really get permission for. Especially with the backlog of two years worth of gaming to draw on.

Changing Gears

Feature articles have been abandoned for creative nonfiction. Ie memoir. This is going to work so much better - one, now no more hunting down publications, not even having to specify an audience. Two, I think the genre fits the game better. It's all about stories and characters anyway. Three, I hate journalism/articles with a burning passion, while I actually like fiction. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why I got articles stuck in my head and creative nonfiction never entered it. Liz doesn't know why she didn't mention it either.

New research question to be re-worked:
What is it about D&D that creates and emotional investment from gamers and how is that illustrated by reactions to changes/new versions? Will still need to include something about articulation, due to rejigged rules about how the creative production has to answer the question on its own, something that still doesn't make that much sense to me.

Creative production should:
Talk about the creation of other selves (look into theory surrounding this) (is this psychological theory? [oh NO])
Give a sense of progress from the game.
Ideally, start with an incident of playing the game - introduce the idea of characters/character investment/other players.
Set up the gaming scene, and a picture of the group.
Create feelings for the reader, create an attachment, ie the one we feel for the game/characters.

Anecdotes should be interwoven with story. First: map out the story you want to tell, then how, then what to support it with.

Within the exegesis, show that you know the form and what it allows you to do.
